A glimpse into the prized heritage of a Savile Row Mill

STYLEGUIDE was invited to a special afternoon event hosted by The Prestigious, one of Singapore’s leading tailors, showcasing significant heritage from Savile Row Holland & Sherry’s open vault, including some items that require white-glove handling which have never been brought out before.

From its simple origin in 1836 as woolen merchants specialising in woolen and silk cloths at 10 Old Bond Street, Holland & Sherry has grown to become one of the foremost fabrics supplier at Savile Row providing the finest cloths to top tailors worldwide. They are notable for luxurious fabrics made with strands of 22 carat gold as well as ones sprinkled with crushed sapphires.

Showcasing collection of signature and luxury fabrics

The Black Pearl fabric gives a slightly iridescent glow and lustre as you look at it - black pearls have been carefully crushed into fine micron particles that are then applied to the cloth and embedded between the fibres of the ultrafine micron merino wool. While the Blue Sapphire fabric next to it does not have quite the same sheen, it is nevertheless equally luxurious, albeit in a quiet manner.

Another form of quiet luxury is the signature fabric where you can have your own name, company, or slogan woven into the fabric to ensure a unique and personalised suit a cut above the rest.

A range of fabrics reflecting Holland and Sherry's core values of quality and craftmanship.

The Mesh Blazers Collection

“Traditionally the blazer was made from a wool serge, hopsack, worsted or woollen flannel but today we also have the mesh. In contrast a mesh fabric offers a relaxed and less structured look. A mesh garment is quite often unlined allowing the body to breathe and stay cool in warmer climates.”

The Swan Hill Collection

“Holland & Sherry’s Swan Hill collection has been created by blending a 15.5 micron merino wool with cashmere of a similar micron count. This luxurious blend is then spun to a 90/2nm yarn count, woven into 2/2 twill construction and finished with a traditional “true merchant finish”. The finished cloth has an abundant richness, is full-bodied and has a gentle handle; a true example of luxury.”

Holland & Sherry’s private ledgers used in the 1800s detailing customers and their orders

This is the first time the private ledgers has been exhibited outside of their vault. The address stated on the chest "7 Warwick St, London" was the old premises of Holland & Sherry at Golden Square since 1886, at the time the epicenter of the woolen merchanting trade. After almost a century, Holland & Sherry moved to Savile Row in Mayfair, Central London in 1982.
